Inquiry Learning

Our Inquiry curriculum is organised under five Conceptual Lenses across subject disciplines.

The aim of our unique model of inquiry is to develop well-rounded learners who respond to challenges with optimism, open minds and confidence.

In this process, students are equipped to pose questions, investigate, problem solve and deepen their understanding of their world and themselves as reflective responsive learners, gradually moving from ‘What I know’ towards ‘How I know’.

This method allows our educators to design a curriculum that is broad, balanced, and meaningfully connected to real-world ideas, fostering deeper understanding and engagement.

Within this dynamic learning environment, students work both independently and collaboratively to generate questions, conduct research, and seek solutions. Teachers act as facilitators, introducing provocations, resources, excursions, and investigations that deepen understanding and extend thinking.

Inquiry Learning at CGS is interactive and student driven. Learners have voice and choice in how they explore topics, plan their research, and present their findings. This process not only builds academic skills but also encourages students to take meaningful action based on their discoveries.

Through Inquiry, we offer a holistic education that nurtures curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. In doing so, we prepare students to become active, informed global citizens.

Each of the five Conceptual lenses include an umbrella concept, which frames each Inquiry.
Casey Grammar School’s Five Areas of Inquiry are:

Me, You & Us

An inquiry into identity, wellbeing, relationships and how we learn to live and work with others.  Students explore who they are, how they manage their emotions and actions, and how they connect with others in respectful and inclusive ways.

They explore how concepts such as compassion, empathy, and collaboration, help build positive relationships and contribute to a caring, inclusive community. They explore elements of family, places of origin and how we express ourselves a

Place & Time

An inquiry into how people, places and events shape our world and our understanding of it.  Students explore their connections to place, both past and present, and how individuals and groups have influenced and been influenced by their environments over time.

They explore how our identity, perspective and place evolve in a changing world. Students investigate the impact of time on places, communities or events.

How Our World Works

An inquiry into the natural and designed systems that shape life, matter, energy, and human innovation. Students explore scientific principles, including forces and materials to cycles and energy flows. and how humans apply this knowledge through technology.

Students explore how various elements work individually and together to function effectively ad fulfill a purpose.

Systems & Communities

An inquiry into the interconnected systems that sustain life, and the roles individuals play within communities. Students explore natural systems, such as ecosystems and the water cycle, as well as human-made systems, including technology and infrastructure.

They investigate how these systems function and how individuals and groups contribute to fostering inclusive, resilient communities.

Sharing Our Planet

An inquiry into the rights and responsibilities involved in sharing finite resources with other people and living things. Students explore concepts such as biodiversity, sustainability, and the interdependence of living and non-living systems.

They investigate how human actions impact the environment and the importance of ethical decision-making in promoting equity and conservation. This theme encourages students to develop a sense of global citizenship and to consider their role in fostering a balanced and sustainable world.

Inquiry Learning is a key element of our educational approach at Casey Grammar School. It encourages students to become curious, independent thinkers by focusing on the development of concepts rather than simply delivering content.
