It is normal for students to face setbacks and challenges in their life.
We encourage students to speak to someone at the school if they are struggling, and it is impacting their learning or causing them distress. As a school, we offer a range of supports to students, including our ‘Casey Cares’ Wellbeing Curriculum and regular incursions from organisations such as Cyber Safety Project, Toolbox Education, Tomorrow Man/Tomorrow Woman, Body Safety Australia, and others.
In the Junior School, classroom teachers are often who students will speak to regarding issues impacting them. In Senior School, students can speak to their Wellbeing Mentors or Head of Year/Heads of House in most cases. Sometimes students may have a strong relationship with another staff member. For example a sports coach, learning assistant, instrumental music teacher, or other specialist teacher. Our goal is that every student has a staff member with whom they feel they can talk if they are distressed or otherwise struggling.
In some cases, where the challenges facing students are causing distress and students are having a difficult time coping, they may be referred to our student services team for short-term counselling. Fundamental to successful counselling is the student’s willingness to face the challenge and to work to overcome it.
Our counsellors use a variety of recognised therapeutic and psychoeducation approaches including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, and acceptance-commitment therapy to assist students. If a longer period of counselling is required, the team may recommend external referral.
Our counsellors abide by all child safety obligations and by the code of ethics and practice of the Australian Counselling Association.
