Supporting Young People as They Discover Who They Are

As children and teenagers grow, they begin to explore and better understand who they are, how they see themselves, and where they feel they belong in the world.

Young people may express themselves in different ways through their friendships, interests, appearance, values, identity, or the communities they connect with. For many, this is a normal and important part of growing, learning, and developing a sense of self.

At times, parents may feel unsure about how best to support their child as they navigate these changes. One of the most valuable things we can offer young people is a sense of safety, acceptance, and open communication. Feeling listened to, respected, and supported at home can have a significant positive impact on a young person’s wellbeing, confidence, and emotional resilience.

It is important for children and teenagers to know they do not have to have everything figured out immediately, and that they are supported as they continue learning about themselves and their place in the world.
