Small Habits, Strong Starts

It has been wonderful to welcome students back on campus and to feel the familiar energy that comes with a new school year. Whether your child is returning to the Senior School, transitioning from our Junior School, or new to Casey Grammar School, we hope the year ahead is one where they feel supported, challenged and increasingly confident in who they are becoming.

The beginning of Term 1 brings fresh routines, new subjects, co-curricular commitments, and leadership roles. While big goals often receive the most attention, it is the smaller, everyday choices that ultimately shape a successful year.

At our Senior School Assembly on Day 1, students were encouraged to notice the patterns that sit underneath their habits. When things feel rushed, disorganised or overwhelming, the issue is rarely a single moment of difficulty; it is usually the routine leading into it. Developing positive habits begins with recognising what is not working and adjusting those patterns in small, practical ways.

This term also marks the introduction of our new Learning Centre, which has already become an important part of Senior School life. The Study Hall, available to Year 11 and Year 12 students during scheduled study periods, provides a dedicated space for collaborative work, early preparation for SACs and regular review of lesson content. It has been encouraging to see students use this environment to build consistent, organised habits that support strong academic progress.

These early weeks are an ideal time to reflect on simple actions that make days smoother and more productive. For example:

None of these changes are dramatic, but over time they help students stay organised, manage workload and approach challenges with confidence. Awareness is the starting point: notice the pattern behind the problem, not just the problem itself.

In my twenty years at Casey Grammar School, one thing has remained true: the students who thrive are not always the most naturally gifted, but those who commit to small, steady habits. They focus on punctuality, organisation, curiosity, teamwork and using their time well. These daily choices support wellbeing and academic growth, and we will continue to encourage them throughout the year.

Thank you for your support as we begin Term 1 together. We look forward to partnering with you and watching our students make meaningful progress. To help plan your term calendar, a CGS Dates card has been sent to families. Please take note of the upcoming Parent Information Evenings:

Year 7 Transition

It was wonderful to welcome our 2026 Year 7 students into the Senior School last Wednesday. After farewelling their families in the morning, the Year 7 students spent Wednesday and Thursday settling into Senior School life.

This included:

Most importantly, they spent time getting to know each other, and many new friendships have already begun. On Friday, they had their first full day of classes. While there were a few questions about room locations and equipment, there were smiles, positivity and kindness on display throughout the day.

Congratulations to all students for settling into Senior School life so well. There is so much to look forward to this year, including our Year 7 Orientation Camp in Week 5. We can’t wait!
