Research shows that even being in the presence of a dog can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels.
In one of our surveys, 92% of our students said they felt more relaxed when there was a dog in the classroom and when children are less stressed, they engage and learn more.
A wellbeing dog can also assist some students by improving school attendance, communication skills and behaviour, while helping some young people to manage trauma or develop leadership.
Casey Grammar School’s wellbeing dog, Buddy, has been extensively trained through the Dogs Connect program and joined the school in February 2024. He is a Labradoodle — a cross between a Labrador and a Standard Poodle.
Before children join our school, families receive a Considerations Checklist with information provided to the Dogs Connect program. Students do not have to interact with Buddy if they prefer not to and it is also important that parents please let us know if their child has any allergies or fears related to dogs.
Hi, my name is Buddy!
I live with Ms Birch. She feeds me in the morning and at night, takes me for walks, plays with me and showers me with love.
I love snuggling with my toy dinosaur, playing with my toy shark, chasing tennis balls, playing tug-o-war, meeting new people and smelling everything. My favourite foods are carrots, strawberries and cheese!
Walks around my neighbourhood are so fun. I love to explore everywhere and watch the cars go by. I really love working at Casey Grammar School.
