Premier’s VCE Award for Zain
Casey Grammar graduate, Zain Wasif, has received a prestigious Premier’s VCE Award after scoring top marks for Industry and Enterprise.
Zain, 18, from Officer, was recognised for his hard work and outstanding achievement in the 2023 VCE at a special presentation ceremony at Melbourne Convention and Exhbition Centre on Wednesday, 17 July.
The Premier’s VCE Awards recognise the exceptional accomplishments of individual students and pay tribute to the schools, teachers and families who play a valuable role in supporting students during their VCE studies.
Zain attended Casey Grammar School for six years and Industry and Enterprise was one of his favourite VCE subjects. It prepares students for the world of work and incorporates topics such as the workplace culture of different organisations, occupational health and safety, the impacts of changing societal values on workplaces and the impact of technology.
“The subject builds enterprising skills and work experience through a range of practical and written tasks. We looked at our own personal work experiences so far to understand how various industries operate and we studied a range of Australian and international industries,” explains Zain.
Zain, who is now studying Physiotherapy at university, has some advice for the current batch of VCE students preparing for exams later this year.
“Understand how VCE grades are marked, break down the questions and be straightforward and concise in your answers,” he says.
“Don’t stress too much, take breaks and enjoy activities outside of study, too.”
“Casey Grammar is thrilled to see Zain receive a Premier’s VCE Award. It is very well-deserved and recognises Zain’s commitment to his studies,” says Casey Grammar School Principal, Fiona Williams.
“Zain was an exceptional student who always did his very best inside and outside the classroom. He brought energy and plenty of ideas to school and Casey Grammar wishes him the very best for his future.

Premier’s Award achievement for Juna
Year 12 student Juna Gemmell has been honoured with a Premier’s VCE Award after scoring a perfect 50 in Outdoor and Environmental Studies during Year 11 in 2021.
The Premier’s VCE Awards recognise the outstanding results of individual students and pays tribute to the principals, teachers and families who play a valuable role in supporting these students during their VCE studies. Juna, 17, completed Units 3 and 4 Outdoor and Environmental Studies in 2021 as an accelerated subject in Year 11.
Casey Grammar School Principal Fiona Williams says the award is exciting news and well deserved.
‘Juna’s achievement epitomises the emphasis on excellence that we instill in all our students,’ Ms Williams says. ‘It’s an incredible achievement for a Year 11 student’. ‘Ten of Juna’s classmates received a study score of 40 or above, which places each of them in the top 6-7 per cent in the state’.
‘The average study score of 39.05 places Casey Grammar School among the state’s highest performing classes in this subject.’
Ms Williams added that Juna is also an excellent swimmer, but she focused on her studies in 2021 and again this year for Year 12.
‘Juna has an incredible work ethic and dedication,’ Ms Williams says. ‘She perseveres and seeks help and clarity when needed. Juna completed many, many, practice exam questions and reviewed sample responses to aid her understanding and knowledge.’‘This is a huge achievement as she now has a great head start into her final year of schooling.’
Juna and her 2021 Outdoor and Environmental Studies classmates regularly worked together in study groups to challenge and encourage each other to do their best, both online during Covid and once they returned to school.
‘Juna and the class set achievable goals and regularly reviewed them with honest and informative feedback regarding where they were up to and what they needed to do next to excel,’ Ms Williams says. ‘Another Outdoor and Environmental Studies student, Olivia Berry, achieved an outstanding study score of 48, placing her among the top 0.5% of students in that subject.’
Juna’s Outdoor and Environmental Studies teacher, Anthony Brown, says, ‘As Juna’s teacher in this subject, it is extremely exciting and rewarding that I have been able to play a role in Juna’s success. To say that I am proud of Juna and the rest of the class is an understatement.’
