The Southern Independent Schools (SIS) is a collaborative association of independent secondary schools in Melbourne’s southern region.
Established in 1978, SIS was created to offer inter-school sporting competitions and has since evolved into a broad platform for both sporting and cultural engagement.
The association fosters a spirit of fair play, cooperation and respect among students through a rich calendar of events including weekly sports such as football, netball, and volleyball, as well as major carnivals in swimming, athletics, and cross country. Beyond sport, SIS promotes cultural enrichment through debating, theatre, music, public speaking, chess, visual arts, and cooking competitions.
Today, SIS includes 14 member schools and multiple campuses, including Casey Grammar School. Other member schools include Balcombe Grammar, Bayside Christian College, Cornish College, Crest Education Christian College, Flinders Christian Community College, Hillcrest Christian College, John Paul College, Maranatha Christian School, Nazareth College, Padua College, St Francis Xavier College, St Johns College, St Peters College, and Woodleigh School.
With a mission to provide enriching experiences and strengthen school communities, SIS continues to support the personal growth and social development of students through meaningful interschool connections.
SIS Performing Arts Events
The SIS Big Night is a highlight of Term 1 and takes place at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong.
Member schools of the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) collaborate in the lead-up to this much-anticipated concert, preparing both individual and combined performance items across a variety of ensembles.
The combined ensembles may vary from year to year but often include the SIS Choir (up to 100 vocal students), SIS Concert Band (brass, wind and percussion), SIS Orchestra (orchestral strings) and three SIS Dance Ensembles, each showcasing a different dance style. Students involved in these ensembles attend two rehearsal days prior to the event, followed by a technical rehearsal on the day of the concert.
The Big Night offers students a chance to perform in large-scale ensembles, meet peers from other SIS schools, and explore new musical or dance repertoire in a vibrant, collaborative setting.
Students who are interested in participating are encouraged to contact the Head of Performing Arts to register their interest
SIS Theatre Sports
Held in late Term 2, the SIS Theatre Sports Championship is a lively interschool competition where each school prepares a Junior and a Senior team. Students compete in a series of Theatre Sports games, earning points based on a range of performance criteria.
While the goal is to claim the championship title, individual recognition is also awarded in the categories of Best Performer and Best Supporting Actor. Competing students attend a dedicated workshop day to learn and practise the games ahead of the event.
Students interested in joining a team should speak with the Head of Performing Arts.
SIS Chess
SIS Chess is held towards the end of Term 3 and sees Casey Grammar School fielding two teams: a Junior team (Years 7–9) and a Senior team (Years 10–12), each with up to seven students.
Across the day, students compete in seven rounds of chess against similarly ranked players from 15 different schools. Points are awarded for wins and draws, with the top individual and team scorers having the opportunity to advance to the state-level competition.
SIS Sport
SIS Sport provides our students with an exciting opportunity to represent Casey Grammar while competing against other schools in the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) network. Across the year, students from Years 7–10 are able to take part in a wide variety of interschool sports, with each term offering a new range of competitions.
Junior (Years 7–8) and Intermediate (Years 9–10) teams compete in seasonal sports such as cricket, AFL, basketball, netball, soccer, badminton, volleyball, softball, baseball, table tennis and European handball. This rotating structure ensures that all students have the chance to try different sports, develop their skills and showcase teamwork in a competitive but supportive environment.
Beyond weekly team sports, SIS also runs major interschool carnivals in swimming, athletics and cross country. These whole-day events bring together schools from across the region, creating a fantastic atmosphere of participation and achievement.
Students also have the chance to experience SIS Rally Days, where they can represent the school in sports such as golf, tennis, lawn bowls and more. Whether through weekly fixtures, large-scale carnivals or single-day competitions, SIS Sport offers something for everyone and plays an important role in student life at Casey Grammar.
