The Importance of Reconciliation
In my role as Chaplain, I believe strongly in the importance of Reconciliation, especially growing our understanding of the history and culture of the land we all share. It’s a privilege for us to learn about First Nations people in Australia and to share this as part of our students’ overall education.
This knowledge has been promoted through the RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) and we are now implementing our second RAP.
RAP Reps Unite for Learning on Country
One of our exciting programs within the RAP involves having new RAP representatives from Years 3-6 each semester. Last week we had the pleasure of going to Willum Warrain Gathering Place for a tour, a taste of bush food, a Smoking Ceremony, art creation and learning how to weave rope from grasses.
It was a full and exciting day that we all took so much from.
One of the best parts of the RAP is how it brings different people from around the school together. Among those who joined us were parents and carers, our Year 12 School Captain, a Foundation teacher, pre-service teachers and our Years 3-6 RAP Reps.
It was fabulous to share the experience with such a diverse group of people who would never normally have the chance to learn side by side.
Original Artwork Inspires First Nations Garden
We were recently very excited to meet Hayden, a First Nations artist with wood burning expertise. It was fantastic to see the way that students and various classes observed the process and learned from Hayden about his cultural knowledge.
The wood artworks that he created will be made into planter boxes for a special First Nations plant garden opposite the arbour. This will be a place for a whole class to sit down and appreciate the beauty of the space we are in. We can’t wait to see the end result!
Year 1 Class Chapels with Special Guests
We have commenced our Year 1 Class Chapels, celebrating the Family of God. It’s been lovely to see the students listening, singing, dancing and sharing their readings with their parents, carers and grandparents.
Thank you to Mrs Mathews for her work in organising the services and to our special guests who have joined us.
It’s hard to believe that another term has concluded. I trust that you and your families have a good break from school and will return ready for all the excitement of Term 4!
