Senior School Student Wellbeing Policy
Students are divided into Pastoral Care Groups comprising of a ‘vertical mix’ of students (15 max) from Years 7 to 12, each group guided by a mentor.
The Pastoral Care Group is the primary unit of pastoral care and fulfills the need for good communication between the family and the school. The Pastoral Care Group provides for each student a teacher from whom he/she can seek help and guidance in both his work and personal development. It acts as a first point of contact for parents and it encourages mutual understanding, tolerance and a sense of belonging that fosters school spirit and promotes the social well being of each student.
The students will stay with their mentor for their secondary years, providing them with a degree of certainty and comfort. The group meets formally once a week, but the mentor will see each of their students anytime as necessary.
The weekly session is an important time for each group to bond and share any concerns or issues with their mentor, and address the weekly Pastoral Care topic for all students to complete.
Mentors are responsible for overseeing all aspects of a student’s academic and social progress within the School and report directly to the Head of Pastoral Care and Discipline.
Our Classroom staff and mentors are able to offer individual and group support in relation to the academic, social and emotional well-being of all students.
The school also has a Senior Management Team which includes the Principal, Deputy Principal & Head of Senior School, Head of Junior School, Head of Secondary Teaching and Learning , and the Head of Student Wellbeing.
Their role is to offer support and guidance to staff, students and families regarding various personal, developmental and family issues. We also have a Chaplain and an Educational Psychologist who support staff by providing advice in educational assessment and management of students, which may include diagnostic testing.
They work closely with Learning Support staff in developing individual learning programs for students identified as having special needs. The SMT can initiate and liaise with external support personnel where appropriate and provide support within the school’s student wellbeing system.
